New York City bans student AI use through eighth grade starting next week

- NYC's 900,000-student public school system will prohibit students from using AI tools in classrooms from kindergarten through eighth grade, with limited exceptions for students with disabilities.
- The ban stems from concerns that AI use harms cognitive development, particularly 'cognitive surrender', a phenomenon where students stop reasoning independently and defer to software instead.
- High school students may use AI only for specific purposes like learning how the technology works, and companion chatbots designed for emotional support are banned across all grades.
- Teachers can use AI for lesson planning and writing but cannot use it to grade assignments. The district also bans individual screens through third grade and recommends 45 minutes of daily screen time for middle schoolers.
- A taskforce of teachers, officials and experts will produce a report in April to shape permanent AI policy after parents and teachers criticized a 2026 framework as too permissive.
